Fantasy Dr X: Strike Zone
Jose Reyes: Overrated?
March 12, 2008
Author: Antonino Buccellato

There’s always a plentiful amount of players that have an unusual amount of talent that help their teams to the max, but aren’t the sharpest fantasy tools. This isn’t the case with what we’re talking about here, but similar. I’m talking about a phenomenal player named Jose Reyes. These words are coming from an extreme New York Mets nut, but, Jose Reyes is overrated! Yup! That’s right! Overrated. Here are Reyes’ stats from last year, and we will break them down: By Jonathan Tudor!

BA  HR  RBI  SB
.281  12  57  119 78

reyes.jpgWhen you look at his 2007 stats, is there really anything too significant other than his ample amounts of SBs and runs? No. His batting average isn’t as good as other leadoff hitters in the league. His HRs are a let-down considering his total of 19 in 2006.  And 57 RBIs? That is a drop from 81 to 57, a difference of 24. There are some leagues that don’t even include runs as a scoring category. With all that said, Reyes is all about the stolen bases, and in most cases, runs as well. Now, I could draft a player like Ichiro or Crawford in the 2nd or 3rd round to get similar, if not slightly better. overall numbers. With a player like that I could spend my 1st round pick on a big bat. In this case I love David Wright; he has power, and great speed. He is the complete package. If you didn’t see the name Jose Reyes there, would you draft a guy with these stats in the 1st round? No. But, with his great potential and young age, Reyes is an exception. But are those stats you look for with the 2nd or 3rd overall pick? No, but with the potential talent level he has 5th or 6th overall, maybe better. I already said I love David Wright, so, in my opinion, he is the best option for the 2nd overall pick with Hanley’s loss of Miguel Cabrera. I just don’t think that with his current stats, that Jose Reyes is a logical 2nd or 3rd overall pick, and remember, I’m a Mets fan. Outside of fantasy, Reyes is a player that you would build a team around. He is exciting to watch and lifts the Mets like none other, but, in fantasy, I don’t think he’s quite at that level yet. Maybe next year…
