By Paul Greco. Closers are one of those positions you can get late in the draft. Some Fantasy Owners like to nab their closers early, but if you've listened to the Radio Show, Mock Draft play-by-play, or my pal Lenny Melnick, you know by now that you will screw your team by picking closers to early.
When people e-mail and ask me when should they draft their first closer, I always suggest in the 10th-12th round. You'll still get one of the top closers in the game even that late. Here is a list of closers who went in the 10th or later in Monday, Jan. 14th "EXPERT" Mock Draft, held over at MockDraftCentral.
10th Round
1. Billy Wagner
2. Jose Valverde
11th Round
1. Francisco Cordero
2. Bobby Jenks
12th Round
1. Chad Cordero
2. Manny Corpas
Just in those three rounds you can clearly see that you can wait to get quality saves in your draft. Hold off, stock pile on your offense, and get you closers late.
My Breakout Closer this year is Chad Cordero of the Nationals. This team over the winter put together a team that will compete in the National League East. Will they win it? NO!!! But, Cordero will have plenty of chance to save a ton of games this year. I think it was smart for the Nationals to hold onto this guy. He really is one of the best in the game late, and should benefit the Nationals in close games.
My Bounce Back Closer is Eric Gagne despite everyone blowing this guy off. He signed on with the Brewers, a team that will win in the National League Central, and Gagne will be nailing the door shut once again. People are concerned about his mental stability because of what happened last year with the Red Sox, but I believe this is a guy who is out to prove a lot of people wrong. A great late pick in my opinion.
