Written by Paul Greco. Scarcity, scarcity, scarcity. That phrase is the new, "It is what it is." We hear it all to often as a Fantasy Baseball Owner. The need to fill in those positions that are scarce, like 2B, SS, and catchers. Today, we look at the 2B for the 2008 season. 2B is starting to get deeper, but there is only one player worthy of being selected in the first round, Chase Utley. The Philadelphia 2B has not only been the best at his position, but in NL and Mixed 5x5 leagues. In our latest ADP Report, Utley has been selected in recent Mock Drafts as early as the 2nd pick. Brandon Phillips was the biggest surprise of the 2007 with his gaudy numbers at 2B. No one expected the Cincinnati Reds 2B to put up 30-30, especially Fantasy Owners. The question amongst the "Experts" is whether he can do it again? The Reds have put themselves in position to have a great season with the recent acquisitions of Francisco Cordero, picking up the option on OF Adam Dunn, and trade talk with the Baltimore Orioles Erick Bedard. Phillips will put up decent numbers again this season, and falls into the 27 yr old status that many of like to look. This years Break Out 2B is Howie Kendrick. We all know his name, but with only 88 games under his belt in 2007, it's now time for Kendrick to shine. I'm expecting him to win the job out right in spring training, and become a fixture in that potent offense. We all know Kendrick can hit, but what I'm looking for him to do is increase his RBI and run totals from a year ago.Deciding on my comeback 2B for 2008 was a tough choice. There really wasn't a clear cut player to decided on from the 2007 season. My most disappointing 2B from a year ago though was Felipe Lopez. The Nationals 2B came off a great 2006 campaign and was high on many lists as a break out player for 2007. Lopez slumped in June with a .182, and could never recover. In 2008, I'm looking for him to comeback stronger, and put together a decent season where he regains his SB totals. SB's are Lopez's game, and really that's all Fantasy Owners are looking for from him. Ronnie Belliard may stand in his way, but with a strong spring, look Lopez to bounce back.
