Written by Paul Greco. When putting together my Pre-Season rankings, I use many different tools to help me determine where certain players should go in my tier rankings. For instance, I use last years stats, 3-yr averages, 2008 Projections, free-agent/trade movement, ballparks, player quality surrounding the player, and a couple other determining factors. These factors, after all the number crunching, help me layout my tiers, rankings, and auction pricing. Your first look at the 1B Rankings will probably make you say, "What the hell Greco!!!" Let the bashing begin for all you Albert Pujols fans. The clear cut choice from years past, I will tell no longer is. There's a new #1 1B, and you'll find that the National League is just stock piled at the position. If you're participating in an NL only draft, you can wait to the middle of the draft to make your 1B selection. I believe this position is extremely deep. If you're playing in a 5x5 leagues you can also wait to the middle of the draft, especially if you're in an auction draft and don't want to drop 40+ bones on one of the Top 3. My breakout 1B for 2008 is Mike Jacobs. I know, with Miguel Cabrera gone has is this possible? Well, I think this will help Jacobs become a better player. Jacobs will move into the middle of the lineup, and the top of the order for the Marlins is very good. Look for Jacobs to drive in a tons of runs, and increase his HR total from a year ago. Currently, I have Jacobs projected to hit 27-32 HR, drive in 87-105 RBI, and bat between .274-.292. Comeback Player for 2008 was a little tough for me. There really wasn't many players who had terrible off years at 1B. The one player that sticks out though, is New York Mets 1st baseman Carlos Delgado. Suffering through one of his worst years as a pro, I look for Delgado to bounce back, and bounce back strong. I have Delgado projected out to hit 28-34 HR's, 95-110 RBI, and a batting average between .265-.280. For a look at the 2008 1B Rankings Cheat Sheet CLICK HERE.
