3M Performance 400 Preview

August 12, 2008
Author: Jeffrey Gutowski

Rating: 9.0 out of 10
Total votes: 3

Only 4 more races left until the Chase and Kyle Busch will have a commanding lead when it starts. Kyle is guaranteed 80 bonus points right now while Carl Edwards, who sits in second, only has 30 coming at this time.

However, we head to Michigan this weekend and I predict that Carl Edwards will get the win and move 10 points closer to Kyle Busch when the Chase starts. Carl has been fantastic on this type of track throughout his whole career and has 7 top 10 finishes in 8 races at Michigan including a win.

Kyle Busch on the other hand only has 2 top 10 finishes in 7 starts here. But, then again that doesn’t mean much this year when Kyle has been great just about everywhere. I just have to give the edge to Carl this week.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the spring race at Michigan on fuel mileage. He didn’t have the best car but he had the best strategy. Yes, I think he got lucky in that race but he can win at Michigan without luck too. Junior likes to race here and has 4 top 10 finishes in his last 5 starts at Michigan.

Kasey Kahne was on a tremendous streak when he finished 2nd to Junior at Michigan earlier this season and has what it takes to win this weekend. Kasey won here a couple of seasons ago and is another driver who loves this track.

Matt Kenseth is probably the most consistent driver at Michigan. Matt has finished in the top 10 in 11 of the last 14 races he has run here including 2 wins. Matt will be looking for a strong run once again this weekend to move himself up in the standings where he sits 22 points ahead of Clint Bowyer for the last Chase spot.

Tony Stewart has been unbelievable here lately also. Tony has 10 top 10 finishes in his last 12 Michigan starts but no victories in that stretch. Once again the Toyota power should keep Tony in contention this weekend.

Both Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson seem to be hit or miss at Michigan. Jeff has really struggled most of the year while Jimmie is getting better and better as the season moves closer to the Chase. I would sit both of them this weekend though.
