Baseball Hitters contact rate!

January 11, 2008

Rating: 5.8 out of 10

I started looking into the Contact Rate % and how it can affect Fantasy Owners, and the more I dug into this, the more I felt that those with lower Contact Rate % were better for your team.  Why?  Well when you look at Contact Rate %, the formula is ((AB-K)/AB), which means we eliminate walks completely out of the mix.  So, players that have a high rate of walks, but strikeout a lot will be effected more towards the lower end of the Contact Rate. I also wanted to see those that had at least 150 AB's, this way it wouldn't screw with the overall effect of this PDF.
Lets take a look at the Top 10 HR hitters and how Contact Rate % affected them:

As you can see, only two of the Top 10 HR hitters from a year ago had a Contact Rate over 80%, which is the magical number that we are supposed to look for.
Where Contact Rate comes into play more is when you're looking for player with higher average.  Of the those players who had a Contact Rate of 80% or more 51 players had a batting average over .300, compared to just 10 that were below 80%.
Also, of these players that had at least 20+ HR's, 44 players had a Contact Rate of 80% or more, compared to those under 80%, with only 40 players applied.
This is another great tool to use when playing out your Fantasy Baseball Draft.
